54 YEARS BROKE
As a young boy, my teachers taught me a phrase
that looked so real only in dreams and fantasies, “You are leaders of
tomorrow”. Patiently I have waited for this tomorrow, but it is not
forthcoming.
Today,
my beloved country celebrated its 54 years of independence. I sat at home
listening to boring speeches, and people calling in to wish a happy birthday.
Even though patriotism has influenced us to celebrate, and public holiday kept
us at home, the truth remains that most of us have lost hope for a better
Nigeria. We are just clinging on to the thin wire of change.
The
present administration came with a “Transformation
Agenda”, of course we were transformed, but only God knows if we got better
or worse from this transformation.
I
could not use my TV today, because EDDC decided to celebrate our independence
in darkness. 54 years old, and this man is still barren. What do we boast of?
Anyway we are lucky it is a man, he can still deliver at anytime, because if it
was a woman, I would have concluded that we have reached menopause.
Am
not the first to write about the sickness of Nigeria, a lot of writers have
done same? Today, am not writing to blame my dear country, or to blame myself
for being a Nigerian, rather am writing to console Nigerians. Soon things will
change; we are broke today, tomorrow it will be better.
Patiently,
I will still be waiting for that tomorrow my teachers always talked about,
praying hard that I will still be alive to witness the menopause of our
suffering as a nation, and the delivery of a better Nigeria.
Until
then...
HAPPY
INDEPENDENCE!!!
