SALES GIRLS
I wanted to read, but I had no book
in mind, all I wanted at the moment was any detective novel by a foreign
author.
I
boarded a bus to the nearest bookshop, and my request was simple, I requested
for any novel by a foreign author. The lady I met, who by all looks is not the
owner but probably a Sales Girl told
me they had none, I was about leaving when she called back and gave me a copy
of “Americanah” by Chimamanda Adichie. I almost laughed, was Chimamanda a
foreign author, oh! Maybe the title of the novel “Americanah” sounded foreign
to her, so it should be by a foreign author.
The
Sales Girl at the next bookshop
didn’t prove to be of any difference. Here I specified what I wanted, a foreign
detective novel. All she did was showed me a copy of Ben Carson’s “Think Big”.
Of course she got the aspect of foreign author right, but I began to wonder
when Ben Carson left motivational to author detective novels.
I
was already enjoying the fun, so I decided to visit the next bookshop. I wasn’t
surprise when I met the sales girl brushing an aged weavon that should be
resting somewhere in the dustbin. I greeted and requested for any novel by a
foreign author. She politely said she had none without looking up from her old
weavon. As I was about leaving I saw a copy of Ben Carson on the shelf, and I
wondered if Ben Carson was a Nigerian.
Maybe the Sales
Girl doesn’t even know the books she has in stock or probably she knows
nothing about books, her business as a sales girl is just to count money and
keep records. Gist with every guy that walks in and gossip with any girl that
comes around just like every other Sales
Girl.
